Kartik Purnima falls on the full moon day (Purnima Tithi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the Hindu month of Kartik. It is one of the most sacred and spiritually powerful days in the Hindu calendar.
On this day, Lord Shiva destroyed the demon Tripurasura, and hence the day is also called Tripuri Purnima or Tripurari Purnima. It marks the victory of good over evil and the establishment of divine order.
If the Krittika Nakshatra coincides with this Purnima, it is known as Maha Kartiki. If Bharani Nakshatra occurs on this day, it is said to bestow auspicious and prosperous results, while Rohini Nakshatra makes this Purnima even more powerful and spiritually uplifting.
According to scriptures, Lord Vishnu took the Matsya Avatar (fish incarnation) on the eve of Kartik Purnima, marking this day as highly divine and sacred.
Kartik Purnima is considered one of the most auspicious days for performing religious rituals, donations, and pilgrimages. Taking a holy dip (Ganga Snan) in the sacred rivers such as Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, or Narmada and performing Deep Daan (lighting of lamps) during this day grants the merit equivalent to performing ten Yagyas.
The day is praised by Lord Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh (Shiva), Angira, and Aditya as one of the most sacred and purifying festivals.
On Kartik Purnima, devotees also celebrate Dev Deepawali, especially in Varanasi, where thousands of lamps are lit along the ghats of the Ganga river to honor the victory of the gods over the demons.
The rituals performed on Kartik Purnima hold immense spiritual importance. Devotees follow these steps with devotion and purity:
From this day onwards, observing fasts on every Purnima and singing devotional hymns at night ensures that all desires are fulfilled and life becomes prosperous and peaceful.
Kartik Purnima is said to wash away the sins of several births. The day is especially sacred for worshipping both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.
If the Moon is in Krittika Nakshatra and the Sun in Vishakha Nakshatra, it forms Padmak Yoga, which is considered extremely auspicious. If both Moon and Jupiter are in Krittika Nakshatra, the day is celebrated as Maha Purnima.
Performing Deep Daan, Yagya, and Tripura Utsav on Kartik Purnima is believed to end the sufferings of past lives and lead the devotee toward spiritual liberation (Moksha).
In ancient times, there lived a powerful demon named Tripurasura. He performed severe penance (Tapasya) in Prayagraj for one hundred thousand years. His austerities caused fear among the gods (Devtas), who tried to disturb his penance by sending celestial nymphs (Apsaras), but they failed.
Pleased with his devotion, Lord Brahma appeared before him and granted him a boon. Tripurasura asked that he should not be killed by any deity or human. Lord Brahma agreed, and as a result, Tripurasura became arrogant and began to torment gods, sages, and humans alike.
His tyranny spread across the three worlds, and he even attacked Mount Kailash to defeat Lord Shiva. Seeing his cruelty, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu joined forces with Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva then took the form of Tripurari and destroyed the three cities of the demon with a single arrow, thus ending his reign of terror.
This divine victory is commemorated every year as Tripuri Purnima or Kartik Purnima — symbolizing the destruction of ego, ignorance, and evil.
Kartik Purnima 2026 will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 24, 2026. It is a day of light, purity, and spiritual awakening. Observing fast, performing Deep Daan, Ganga Snan, and acts of charity on this day brings prosperity, peace, and divine grace.
It is believed that the merit earned on this single day equals that of performing numerous sacred rituals and Yagyas throughout the year. Kartik Purnima is thus a reminder of the eternal victory of light over darkness and righteousness over evil.
