Basant Panchami 2026 – Muhurat and Significance
Location: New Delhi, India
Puja Muhurat: 07:13:29 AM to 12:33:04 PM
Duration: 5 Hours 19 Minutes
Basant Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day (Panchami Tithi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the Hindu month of Magh. This day marks the beginning of Vasant Ritu (the spring season) in India. It is also the day dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of wisdom, learning, and art.
The festival is celebrated when the Panchami Tithi prevails during the first half of the day — that is, the time between sunrise and midday. If the Panchami Tithi begins after midday and continues into the first half of the next day, then Basant Panchami is observed on the following day. However, if Panchami Tithi prevails even for a short time during the first half of the first day, the celebration is held on that same day.
Due to this rule, Basant Panchami occasionally falls on the Chaturthi Tithi as per the Panchang.
On this day, Lord Kamdev and Goddess Rati are worshipped in sixteen sacred ways (Shodashopchar Puja), especially during the first half of the day (from sunrise till midday). It is believed that performing this Puja brings happiness, love, and harmony in married life.
It is believed that when husband and wife together perform Rati-Kamdev Puja with this Sankalp and sixteen offerings (Shodashopchar), their marital relationship becomes blissful, full of love, and blessed with eternal harmony.
This Dhyan describes the divine image of Rati and Kamdev — adorned in red attire and ornaments, embracing each other with love and grace. Meditating upon this form during Puja is said to invoke harmony and affection between couples.
At the given auspicious time, devotees — especially students, teachers, and artists — worship Goddess Saraswati. The Puja becomes more powerful when Saraswati Stotra or Saraswati Vandana is recited along with the rituals. Worshipping Goddess Saraswati on this day is believed to bless one with wisdom, knowledge, and artistic excellence.
Basant Panchami is also known as Sri Panchami. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu are worshipped together. Some devotees also worship both Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati simultaneously, symbolizing the unity of wealth and wisdom. Businessmen often perform Lakshmi Puja and recite Shri Sukta to invite prosperity and success.
The worship rituals can be performed in either five steps (Panchopchar) or sixteen steps (Shodashopchar).
It is important to remember that Panchami Tithi is considered valid only when it prevails between sunrise and midday.
Basant Panchami ke din Pooja do tariko se ki ja sakti hai — Panchopchar aur Shodashopchar. Dono ke apne alag mahatva aur vidhi hain.
